The 2011 NFL season has begun so we wanted to show you our favorite rap video made by our favorite football team the Philadelphia Eagles. This 1988 gem would have probably been lost in time if it weren't for the internet. Thank you internet!!!!!!

Classic Nickelodeon: Kids Court

 

Nickelodeon was definitely our most watched TV channel when we were kids. There were so many amazing shows that there are just too many to name! One show that comes to mind is Kids Court. 

Kids Court is a show where a studio audience filled with kids watches two kids discuss real life grievances that were mailed in by real life kids. When the two sides are done representing their cases, the studio audience then yells and screams like wild animals trying to be the loudest. The "Judge-o-meter" would measure the decibels of the screaming and whichever side was loudest wins the case! The show ends with host Paul Provenza going around the child audience asking the kids to say what is unfair. If something was unfair they'd yell "UNFAIR!!!!!!!!". The show even had two courtroom sketch artists. We always thought they had the coolest job in the world!!!

Dunkin' Donuts Croissant Sandwiches unite the US and the French!

This Dunkin' Donuts commercial is pretty much like the last Dunkin' Donuts commercial. Fred the Baker is in it, it talks about Dunkin' Donuts' tasty 99 cent breakfast croissant sandwiches, and the voice-over dude says "KWA-SONT" like an American trying to sound French.

Time to make the donuts...

There were many, many Dunkin' Donuts commercials in the 80's and 90's. During this time a star was born and his name was Michael Vale, otherwise known as "Fred the Baker". We all felt his pain when this sleepy-eyed mustachioed Dunkin' Donuts worker had to wake up early and say the famous catchphrase, "Time to make the donuts..."

He played this role for 15 years from 1982 to 1997 and I'm sure he loved every second of it. Johnny from The Outsiders was correct when he said that "nothing gold can stay", because the legend Michael Vale passed away on December 24, 2005 due to complications from diabetes at age 83.

In this commercial Fred the Baker is being rewarded for his 99 cent croissant breakfast sandwiches that he graciously baked for all of America. Here's to you Fred!

Is this 'Maytag Repairman' Jesse White's last commercial ever?

This commercial shows truckloads of Maytag appliances being driven around and getting ready for Maytag's Truckload Sale. They got Washers, Dryers, Dishwashers, Ranges...
With this sale you can save $30!!

But it's sad because an old, lonely appliance repairman says "At least they got some place to go". Well, that old man has some history to him. He played a character created for Maytag and his real name was Jesse White (who already had a substantial acting career with roles in Broadway shows, feature films, and tv shows which included The Twilight Zone, The Dick Van Dyke Show; The Donna Reed Show; The Munsters; The Addams Family; and I Dream of Jeannie, among others).

His new role was to be a repairman and show that Maytag appliances were so reliable that he wasn't needed anymore. He was this character from 1967 - 1988. This campaign ended up being very successful for Maytag.

Interestingly though, this commercial that we have here for your viewing pleasure, might be his last EVER as the "Maytag repairman" since it's the same year he stopped being that character.

Several actors took his place thereafter with not as much success as Jesse White had. Eventually, the "Maytag repairman" character became a symbol for a professional whose services are rarely needed which some say, among other reasons, led to the decline of Maytag.

Frank Lautenberg doesn't want you anywhere near his daughters

Frank Lautenberg is considered one of the US Senate's most liberal members. He is also the oldest, at age 87. His age hasn't stopped him from his liberal stance because just a few days ago, in opposition to the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," he told the GOP, “I won’t attempt to voice my views on your family and let my family alone. Don't go near my daughters." Ouch!

Now rewind 23 years and you will see an ad from the days when life was a bit easier, things were a bit slower. The year was 1988 and a battle was raging between Lautenberg and Republican Wall Street executive and former college football star Pete Dawkins for a New Jersey Senate seat. After trailing in the polls, the Lautenberg campaign ran an aggressive ad campaign focusing on pointing out the lack of Dawkins' Jersey roots and that he was only running for Senate in order to get him one step closer to his ultimate goal, which was to become President of the United States of America. He failed at both and Frank Lautenberg is still living and is still a Senator.

A little Jasmine tea for your very early morning commute/late night pass-out fest

This Burger King commercial from 1988 features Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert) from the 80's TV classic "The Cosby Show". People loved her so much that the producers decided to make a spin-off and she eventually went on to star as Whitley Gilbert in "A Different World", which ran from 1987 - 1993.  She is best known for being a spoiled, snobby bitch. A great show indeed!

In this Burger King commercial Jasmine doesn't fail to please and is just as snobby and just as bitchy as ever. Go Jasmine go!

This is probably one of our favorite commercials that we have. It makes me want to jump into a time machine and go to the Epcot Center of the 80's. We went as kids right around this time and it was EXACTLY like the video!

NEW Cheese Ritz Bits: Every bit as good as a Ritz

This is when Cheese Ritz Bits were brand new. I guess this is before Nabisco made Ritz Bits Sandwiches which have different fillings such as Peanut Butter or Cheese. These were just cheese-flavored crackers. Supposedly, Ritz crackers were named after Ritz-Carlton because it conjured up the image of wealth and glamour.

Btw, the Ritz Bits thief at the end of this commercial is the scientist/doctor guy.

"Today's TWA" - Well actually, 1988's TWA

This commercial came out in 1988 when TWA was most successful (carrying more than 50% of all the trans-Atlantic passengers). Shortly after, they would file for bankruptcy and be acquired by American Airlines.

1988 Human Rights Now! rally in Philly

Here is a news reporter named Dan Mechum inviting everyone to come to the Human Rights Now! rally in Philadelphia. In the background is beautiful Penn's Landing along the Delaware River!

The Rally was on September 18, 1988 at Noon and it was located at the Judge Lewis Quadrangle on 5th & Market Streets in Philadelphia, PA.

From Wikipedia: "Human Rights Now! was a worldwide tour of 20 benefit concerts on behalf of Amnesty International that took place over six weeks in 1988.
