Radical Recipe: How to make Nickelodeon's green slime

Today we are putting our Julia Child chef hats on and will teach you how to make the famous green slime from the amazing Nickelodeon show called "You Can't Do That on Television". It aired from February 3, 1979 to May 25, 1990 and was pretty damn amazing! The show featured Canadian teen actors acting out sketch comedy skits. We still remember being little and laughing at the way they said "sooory" (sorry) and "aboot" (about). Those crazy Canadians!

The way it worked in the show was if you said "I don't know", you would get slimed. It was that simple! Didn't you always wonder what was in the slime? Well, we did and we got info from our inside sources and they told us exactly what was in this slimy green mess. This is top secret information and only Bobby Budnick, Mr. Earnst, and Sam from "Today's Special" know the ingredients! OK, actually we got these recipes from YCDTOTV.com but it's still the official recipes!

SLIME #1 (OFFICIAL)

INGREDIENTS: water, jello powder, flour, baby shampoo 

DIRECTIONS: Mix em up and chill slightly. 

SLIME #2 (OFFICIAL)

INGREDIENTS: cream of wheat, cold water, shampoo, green coloring 

DIRECTIONS: Mix em up!

SLIME #3 (OFFICIAL)

INGREDIENTS: cream of wheat, cold water, shampoo, green coloring, liquid latex

 DIRECTIONS: Mix em up! (just don't put too much latex)

SLIME #4 (from Double Dare's "Slime Canal")

INGREDIENTS: clear corn syrup, water, green coloring DIRECTIONS: Mix water and syrup. Add coloring and dive in!

 SLIME #5 (from Nickelodeon Studios circa 1992)

INGREDIENTS: apple sauce, green coloring 

DIRECTIONS: Mix em up!

We're not sure why they had so many versions but we guess the scientists at Nickelodeon Studios had to take many, many years to come up with the perfect recipe! Below is the slime in action...

For those of you who already know the show, they would also have water poured on their heads if they said "water". The secret water recipe is a WHOLE different recipe that we promised to never reveal so our lips are sealed!

Handi-Snacks Cheez'n Crackers are FantaSTICK!!!

Here is an old Kraft Handi-Snacks Cheez'n Crackers commercial from 1995. It features "Stick Figure" who is the famous plastic red stick you use to spread the cheese with. He's a pretty funny guy! Was he in any other commercials or did Kraft fire him since they thought he was too cheesy? HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Stick Figure has some great lines such as:

          "My rooms got a sunroof...I can eat crackers in bed...AND I get to splash around in a tub full of cheese!!"

          (Acts like he's JAWS) "Pretty scary huh? Oooh! I'm shakin' in my cheese!!"

          "Give me all your cheese! This is a STICK up!!"

          "It's great being me. Only one small problem. NO ROOM FOR A BRAIN!!!"

          "Enough with the yackin'...it's time for snackin'!!"

          "Handi-Snacks. FantaSTICK!!"

I used to love eating these during lunchtime when I was a kid. My mom didn't buy them too often so whenever I'd open my lunch bag and see the cheez'n crackers goodness, I'd be so happy. I haven't tried them in sooooo long. Are they any good anymore???

A&P and Pathmark in 1989. Come share the proud new feeling!

One day back on July 28, 1989 we accidentally recorded three supermarket commercials. Two being A&P and the other one was Pathmark.

These supermarkets were huge in NY, NJ, and PA (we locals call it the Tri-State Area). Some consider A&P the original Wal-Mart. Pathmark was big too. They both had their heydays but as you know, times change. Pathmark was eventually bought by A&P.
And, you guessed it, A&P eventually filed for bankruptcy.

Here are their commercials back when their golden years were long gone and they were on their last legs. You would never know it from these commercials!!!

Come share the proud new feeling...at A&P! So much is going on in this commercial. They're really promoting their "Get More, Spend Less" campaign - it's everywhere. Notice the 80's looking products such as Ritz Crackers, Planters Corn Chips and Cheese Curls, and Charmin Free toilet paper. Also, it goes by really fast, but at the very end check out the kids flying by the camera - one is pushing his shopping cart while the other kid is inside! That looks so much fun!! A&P had so much hope back then.

So much is going on in this commercial too. It's kind of like the first one but it has a much better song. This song just makes me so happy and I just want to join the proud new feeling...at A&P! (I've actually seen the same exact commercial on YouTube from 1989 but instead it was for SuperFresh which is a division of A&P. They just made some minor changes. Interesting.)

This is a Pathmark commercial that was aired alongside the A&P commercials. Who knew that just under 20 years later, A&P would buy-out Pathmark? It's a crazy world.

Actor James Karen was Pathmark's spokesperson back then. You may know him from TV classics such as "Eight is Enough" or "As The World Turns" and "All My Children". Maybe you even saw him in "Poltergeist" or "The Return of the Living Dead" or "Wall Street".

In this commercial he was promoting Pathmark's "21st Anniversary Sweepstakes" in which they were giving away 1989 Cadillac Sedan Devilles. You could also pick up coupons to save up to $16 at Six Flags Great Adventure. How could you not have shopped at Pathmark back then?!?

SIDE NOTE: As of this blog entry, all of the Pathmarks and A&P's that were near our house when were were kids are still around. I wonder for how long...

Burger King + Mini Cheeseburgers ÷ by 1987 = "Burger Bundles"

Here is a Burger King commercial from 1987 promoting Burger King's new mini cheeseburgers which they called "Burger Bundles". You could get 3 of them for $0.99 back then! And it looks like they included a pickle slice!

Was Burger King trying to cramp White Castle's style by having mini-burgers too?
We think so. Was it successful? Probably not. Do you guys remember the
"Burger Bundles"??? We don't. But they do look pretty tasty!!

Popsicle: A frozen drink on a stick!

Who doesn't have great memories of eating a Popsicle stick on a hot summer day as a kid? The best part was that there were TWO Popsicle sticks rather than one, which made it double the fun!

It just so happens that on this day today, March 11, 1986, the Popsicle went from a two-stick pop to a one-stick pop. We couldn't find many facts to corroborate this but we thought we'd blog about it anyway so we had an excuse to post a hot chick sucking a Popsicle!

Were you the "little-licker" that precisely licked back-n-forth between each pop until it split up the middle and then you double-fisted each pop??!!? Or were you the "deep-throater" and you sucked the whole thing dry till it was gone??!?!?!

Dizzy Grizzlies: Now that's a double snack!

Here is a Dizzy Grizzlies cookie commercial from 1995. These cookies were a spin-off of Teddy Grahams. The cookie consists of a graham cracker shaped as a gnarly Grizzly Bear who is shreddin' it up by rollerblading, biking, or skateboarding. The back side of the cookie has a layer of either chocolate or vanilla frosting mixed with rainbow sprinkles.

As an added bonus, on the back of each specially marked box has a 3-D puzzle made from magic sprinkles! We actually took a screen grab from the video to see if the 3-D magic eye puzzle would still work.

Guess what? It works!! And we discovered a secret word next to the bear (which wasn't mentioned in the commercial). Go give it a try and let us know what word you see!

Dunkin' Donuts Croissant Sandwiches unite the US and the French!

This Dunkin' Donuts commercial is pretty much like the last Dunkin' Donuts commercial. Fred the Baker is in it, it talks about Dunkin' Donuts' tasty 99 cent breakfast croissant sandwiches, and the voice-over dude says "KWA-SONT" like an American trying to sound French.

Time to make the donuts...

There were many, many Dunkin' Donuts commercials in the 80's and 90's. During this time a star was born and his name was Michael Vale, otherwise known as "Fred the Baker". We all felt his pain when this sleepy-eyed mustachioed Dunkin' Donuts worker had to wake up early and say the famous catchphrase, "Time to make the donuts..."

He played this role for 15 years from 1982 to 1997 and I'm sure he loved every second of it. Johnny from The Outsiders was correct when he said that "nothing gold can stay", because the legend Michael Vale passed away on December 24, 2005 due to complications from diabetes at age 83.

In this commercial Fred the Baker is being rewarded for his 99 cent croissant breakfast sandwiches that he graciously baked for all of America. Here's to you Fred!

Lose yourself in the taste!

We haven't been able to find a whole lot of info on Centrum's DynaTrim but did uncover some facts.  The commercial doesn't explain much except that you can lose weight from eating DynaTrim, which is actually an "Appetite Suppressant". 

According to a Drug Store News article published on January 21, 1991 the makers of DyanTrim "threw $2.5 million in advertising behind its new product, DynaTrim, on Dec. 30 and 31 alone, said product manager Laurie Shanower, just so people would wake up Jan. 1 knowing about--and (the company hopes) reaching for -- DynaTrim. That was in addition to the $10 million spent since the TV, radio and print ad campaign broke Dec. 12. Altogether, $45 million in trade and consumer advertising will be spent in the first 13 months of DynaTrim's quest to topple Ultra Slim*Fast from its meal replacement throne, Shanower said."

That's a lot of money even for the early 90's! And a pretty catchy song too! Looks pretty tasty if you ask us, but we wonder if it works. Did anyone try this? Let us know!

A little Jasmine tea for your very early morning commute/late night pass-out fest

This Burger King commercial from 1988 features Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert) from the 80's TV classic "The Cosby Show". People loved her so much that the producers decided to make a spin-off and she eventually went on to star as Whitley Gilbert in "A Different World", which ran from 1987 - 1993.  She is best known for being a spoiled, snobby bitch. A great show indeed!

In this Burger King commercial Jasmine doesn't fail to please and is just as snobby and just as bitchy as ever. Go Jasmine go!

NEW Cheese Ritz Bits: Every bit as good as a Ritz

This is when Cheese Ritz Bits were brand new. I guess this is before Nabisco made Ritz Bits Sandwiches which have different fillings such as Peanut Butter or Cheese. These were just cheese-flavored crackers. Supposedly, Ritz crackers were named after Ritz-Carlton because it conjured up the image of wealth and glamour.

Btw, the Ritz Bits thief at the end of this commercial is the scientist/doctor guy.
